How much does a fence cost?
Material makes the biggest difference. For a typical 6-foot residential fence, installed prices, including materials, posts, concrete footings and labour, come to roughly:
- Chain-link
- $45–$52 per linear foot
- Pressure-treated wood
- $61–$72 per linear foot
- Cedar
- $86–$101 per linear foot
- Vinyl or aluminum
- $118–$139 per linear foot
A 100-foot, 6-foot cedar fence with one gate usually comes to $9,050 to $10,650 installed. That uses the same 2026 material and labour rates as the calculator above.
What changes the price:
- Each gate adds a flat cost: roughly $225–$480 for chain-link or pressure-treated, and up to $500–$1,260 for vinyl or aluminum panel gates.
- Cost goes up roughly in step with height, so an 8-foot privacy fence costs more per foot than a 4-foot picket fence.
- Removing and hauling away an old fence adds roughly $5–$10 per linear foot.
- The slope, access, soil and confirming where the property line runs aren’t priced here. A contractor checks those on site.
