How much does landscaping cost?
Landscaping prices depend on the kind of work more than in almost any other trade. Prices for a 900 ft² yard at a standard material level:
- Cleanup & refresh
- $2,650–$4,450
- Beds & sod
- $7,400–$12,300
- Hardscape (walls, stone, grading)
- $25,600–$42,700
Hardscape costs more than three times as much as beds and sod, because retaining walls, stone and drainage are much bigger jobs than planting.
Grading, drainage, the soil and the plants you choose all change the final price. Your landscaper confirms the quote after walking the yard.

- How to compare contractor bidsThree bids for the same job can come in thousands of dollars apart, usually because each contractor priced a slightly different job. Get everyone quoting the same written scope first, and the numbers become worth comparing.
- When do you need a building permit?Painting and new flooring almost never need a permit. Work on the structure, wiring, plumbing or outer shell of the house usually does, and skipping the permit tends to cost you when you sell.
