Material characteristics and ideal room placements#

Selecting the right flooring requires balancing subfloor type, moisture exposure, and refinishing expectations:

  • Solid Hardwood (3/4" thick): 100% natural wood throughout. Can be sanded and refinished 4–6 times over 100+ years. Must only be nailed over above-grade plywood subfloors.
  • Engineered Hardwood: Real hardwood veneer bonded to multi-ply cross-grain plywood. Resists seasonal expansion/contraction; can be glued or floated over concrete.
  • Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP / SPC): Rigid stone-polymer composite core with printed vinyl wear layer. 100% waterproof; ideal for basements, kitchens, and pet-heavy households.
