Removing the wrong wall can cause ceiling sagging or structural failure. Here is how to inspect joists, beams, and basement posts before demo.

How to tell if a wall is load-bearing (before knocking it down)

What makes a wall load-bearing?#

A load-bearing wall carries vertical structural weight from above (roof rafters, floor joists, or upper-story walls) down to the foundation. Partition walls, by contrast, only support their own drywall and divide interior rooms.

Five reliable indicators of a load-bearing wall#

  • Perpendicular joists: If floor joists run perpendicular (at 90 degrees) to the wall, that wall is almost certainly supporting joist ends.
  • Basement beam alignment: If an interior wall sits directly above a main steel I-beam or basement support posts, it carries load.
  • Exterior wall alignment: All exterior perimeter walls are load-bearing.
  • Multi-story stack: Walls on the ground floor that continue directly beneath a second-story wall or roof truss bearing point.

How load-bearing walls are safely removed#

To open up a space, a load-bearing wall must be replaced with an engineered Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) or steel beam supported by point-load posts down to concrete footings, requiring structural engineering drawings and permits.
