Walkway clearances: 36 inches vs. 42 inches vs. 48 inches#
National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) guidelines and building codes specify clear walkway widths to prevent traffic bottlenecks when oven or dishwasher doors open:
- Minimum walkway width: 36 inches between island counter edge and perimeter cabinets in low-traffic single-cook paths.
- Recommended work aisle: 42 inches in cook zones (in front of range, sink, and refrigerator).
- Multi-cook household: 48 inches allows two people to work back-to-back without collision.

Seating overhangs and electrical outlet codes#
- Counter-height seating (36" high): Minimum 15-inch knee overhang clearance for standard bar stools.
- Bar-height seating (42" high): Minimum 12-inch knee overhang clearance.
- Mandatory electrical outlet: Electrical code mandates at least one dedicated GFCI-protected electrical outlet on permanent kitchen islands.
